Series 3: Episode 4
The seafood on the menu this week is an amazing creature with a fossil history dating back 450 million years. We’re the guests of professional diver Chris Theodore and his wife Rachael (also an accomplished TV cameraperson) who operate Sea Urchin Harvest from their property at Batemans Bay. Employing around 20 local people, it’s a sustainable win-win enterprise for both the economy and ecology of the area. We learn how Sea Urchins are an invasive species – like Cane Toads of the sea – that need to be culled and controlled for the health of the whole ecosystem. Along with us for this underwater adventure is chef Mal Meier. He brings a fresh zing to serving Sea Urchin delicacies that will have your mouth watering. And he has a story to tell that could bring you to tears. A survivor of destructive depression, Mal is now an ambassador for RUOK and Lifeline, making this the most worthwhile and challenging Seafood Escape chef interview ever!
